How to Reheat Frozen Rice

The best way to reheat frozen rice is directly from the freezer using steam. For Grain Trust rice, simply place the frozen pouch in the microwave with the steam side facing up and heat on high for 3-4 minutes. There is no need to thaw it first.

As the pouch heats, it expands with steam, creating a hot, moist environment around the rice. The result is soft, fluffy rice in just a few minutes.

Why Grain Trust Frozen Rice Reheats So Well

At Grain Trust, we do the cooking for you. Our parent company, Sage V Foods, developed its process for cooking and freezing rice more than 20 years ago, using custom machinery designed specifically around making the highest-quality frozen rice possible.

After cooking, the rice moves through an IQF (individually quick frozen) process, which freezes the rice rapidly to preserve the moisture and texture of the freshly cooked rice.

At home, the goal is simply to bring that rice back to temperature quickly. Our microwave pouch traps steam as it heats, creating a hot, moist environment around the rice. That is why we recommend going straight from freezer to microwave rather than thawing it first.

How to Microwave Frozen Rice

  1. Place the BPA-free pouch in the microwave with the steam side facing up.
  2. Heat on high for 3-4 minutes. The pouch should balloon with steam during heating.
  3. Once the pouch has fully expanded, allow it to remain inflated for about 30 seconds.
  4. Let the steam vent, carefully tear open the pouch and serve.

For the best results, do not thaw the rice first. Grain Trust rice is designed to go straight from the freezer to the microwave.

How to Reheat Frozen Rice Without the Pouch

If you prefer a plastic-free microwave method, pour the frozen rice into a microwave-safe bowl and cover it with a plate. Then follow the same microwave heating process above. Covering the bowl helps keep steam and moisture around the rice as it reheats. How to Reheat Frozen Rice on the Stovetop

  1. Pour the frozen rice into a nonstick skillet and add 2 tablespoons of water.
  2. Cover and cook over medium heat for 8-11 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. If the rice begins to stick, add another splash of water.
  4. Once thoroughly heated, serve and enjoy.

The stovetop works well, but it takes longer. For the fastest results - and the method our product is designed around - we recommend reheating the rice directly from frozen in the microwave.

Do You Need to Thaw Frozen Rice Before Reheating?

No. Grain Trust rice should be reheated directly from frozen. Because we IQF freeze the rice shortly after cooking, the goal at home is simply to heat it quickly while retaining the moisture and texture already in the rice. Thawing is not necessary and adds time to a process designed to take only a few minutes. USDA confirms frozen cooked foods can be reheated without thawing

Food safety note: Grain Trust frozen rice is not ready to eat directly from the package. Heat it to an internal temperature of 165°F before eating. USDA reheating guidance
